Savisto Ice Cream Maker & Nutella Ice Cream Recipe!

The lovely guys at Savisto sent me one of their amazing ice cream makers to try out, and I gotta say, store bought ice cream will quickly be a thing of the past in our house! You can make 1.5L of ice cream in just 30 minutes, which is more than enough for four after dinner, or speedy enough to whip up something sweet before Bake Off starts - does anyone else really struggle not to gorge whilst watching GBBO? The machine is really easy to use, all you have to do is pop the bowl in the freezer for 12 to 24 hours (depending on how long you have time for) and then when it comes to making your sweet treats just pour in your ice cream mixture, pop the lid on and set it going. It's really nice having a clear lid as you can watch the ice cream being made which really impressed me, so if your a family with small kids that's some easy free entertainment for half an hour! There's a nice clear display which counts down the minutes and an extra large funnel so you can pour in any extra ingredients without having to stop the machine. It's currently on offer for £34.99 which isn't really all that bad for a piece of kitchen tech that actually works, so if you're a massive ice cream fan like me I'd really recommend taking the plunge and ordering one.

Now as seeing is believing, I thought I'd share a little recipe that I put together on my first try - it really is easy peasy to use!

You'll need: 500ml full-fat milk, 300ml pot double cream, splash of vanilla extract, 5 large egg yolks, 140g golden caster sugar. a small jar of nutella and hazelnuts.

The method:

Mix together milk, cream and vanilla extract in a saucepan on a low heat until almost boiling. Once you see small bubbles forming around the edge take the pan off the heat and allow to cool for around 20 minutes. Meanwhile mix the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and then gradually pour the milk mixture over the sugary eggs, whisking continuously until combined. Pour the whole mixture into a new pan and return to a low heat to cook for around 10 minutes, stirring all the time with a wooden spoon. Once the mix is thick enough to coat the back of the spoon without sliding straight off it's ready.

Pour the mixture through a sieve into a bowl, then sit that bowl in a bigger bowl, filled with ice and water to cool it down. Be sure to occasionally stir the mix to help it cool quicker and to prevent any nasty skin forming across the top! Once cooled get your ice cream bowl out of the freezer and set your machine going. About 10 minutes into churning add 3 heaped table spoons of Nutella into the ice cream maker, which will give you a sweet ripple throughout with the occasional chunky bit! If you prefer a finer more even finish you could mix the Nutella into the ice cream mixture whilst it's still in the pan, which would give a similar effect.

To serve, scoop out your ice cream into a bowl whilst gently melting another another table spoon of Nutella to make a super relish chocolate sauce. Drizzle your sauce over the top & sprinkle with crushed hazelnuts for the finishing touch!
