How to create your Spring/Summer wardrobe

22:09

With spring finally upon us, it’s time to leave the overcoat and cardigan at home and step out in something a bit more vibrant. Spring and summer is the perfect time to introduce a splash of colour to your wardrobe, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll be desperate to see the back of frumpy knitwear and clunky boots. Here’s my complete guide to putting together the perfect spring/summer wardrobe, so you can be ready when the sun arrives.

The Jacket - If there’s one essential item for every spring/summer wardrobe, it’s a jacket. As the temperatures start to rise, you’ll finally be able bid farewell to your heavy winter coat and reach for something a lot lighter. But what jacket should you choose? If you want something timeless, go for a denim or leather jacket — it will serve as a wardrobe staple for years. To give a contemporary spin to these classics, go for a model with on-trend shearling, which will hit this year’s big 70s vibe. Pair with brown suede ankle boots and floral prints to complete the retro look, or black skinny jeans and trainers to keep it contemporary.

The Dress - According to Lisa Armstrong in The Telegraph, this year’s biggest trend is to look casual — “if it looks or feels uncomfortable, or if there’s a hint that it’s wearing you, take it off and put it back in its box”, she tells us. Hit this look on the head with one of the season’s big comebacks — the slip dress. A staple of 90s fashion, the slip dress blurs the line between underwear and outerwear, creating a feminine silhouette and making a big statement. Pick up one of these silky dresses in a classic black to strike a sophisticated and sexy figure. Dress it up with draped gold jewellery, or go for a full 90s throwback by matching it with a pair of trainers.

The Shoes - Footwear is by no means exempt from this season’s casual ethos, and according to Who What Wear, flat mules are set to be a must-have. As they’re so breathable, a pair of mules are perfect for walking around hot city streets in the summer or heading to the beach on your holidays. Nail this season’s 70s vibe with a pair of Birkenstocks, which go great with a denim skirt or shorts, or go for a pair with patent leather straps and decorative buckles for something you can dress up as well as keep casual. Take a look at the Charles Clinkard website for a wide range of flat and heeled mules that come with free delivery and a 35-day returns policy.

Add these spring/summer ’16 must-haves to your wardrobe this season to get right on trend for when the temperatures start to rise.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the 90s trend, and I'll certainly be rocking my jelly shoes all summer, but a high neck slip dress is at the top of my wishlist, there's something so sleek and elegant about them, but yet they're basic enough to dress down or up. I'll definitely be sporting the leather trend two, I have two pleather jackets sat in my coat cupboard just dying to be worn, one's a cute Oasis leather look tan jacket, whilst the other is a cream biker look Levis number which is perfect for a sunny day. What are your tips for starting your spring summer wardrobe?
